Years ago, I had an eccentric media professor that liked to drone on and on about the “good ol’ days” of Madison Avenue. Although many students felt that they learned more about the 3 martini lunch than media, it later occurred to me that perhaps there’s something to be said for his colorful life lessons.
In this era, where the majority of business communication is done via E-mail, it’s no wonder agency-client relationships just aren’t what they used to be. On many occasions, I’ve felt that my efforts were more focused on “proving my worth” to a client than serving that client’s needs. Without a strong relationship, this can be a daunting task. I mean, who really trusts marketing people anyway?
So, with this in mind, I’ve decided that I’m going to bring back the 3 martini lunch. And, no it’s not about putting back a few dirty martinis over steaks (although I’m not entirely opposed to it), it’s about bringing back the relationship, trust and candor that once characterized this industry.
